49ers’ 2025 NFL Draft Class: An Overview
With a critical need to replenish their roster following significant player losses, the San Francisco 49ers made major additions through the 2025 NFL Draft. The team, which faced the challenge of filling the void left by over a dozen starters and key backups, embraced an ambitious strategy by utilizing all 11 of their draft picks.
“We knew we had to add a lot of people,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. “Fortunately, we had 11 draft picks, and it’s very rare you use all 11 draft picks. But we needed to because we needed that many numbers and to actually find 11 guys that we believe all have a chance to make the team, all have big roles.”
Immediate Expectations from Defensive Picks
The 49ers anticipate that their first five draft selections will contribute right away to their defense. Here’s a closer look at each player and what they bring to the team:
DE Mykel Williams, Georgia
Selected as the No. 11 overall pick, Williams is projected to significantly impact the team’s defensive line. He is expected to be a Day 1 starter who will line up opposite Nick Bosa, maximizing his ability to set the edge against the run while also enhancing the pass rush.
DT Alfred Collins, Texas
As a second-round pick, Collins fills an important need after the departure of starting tackles. His imposing 332-pound frame is primed for run-stopping during early downs, likely seeing 20 to 30 snaps per game as a Day 1 starter.
LB Nick Martin, Oklahoma State
Picked in the third round, Martin was identified as a potential successor to linebacker Dre Greenlaw. His aggressive playing style is seen as an asset, and he is expected to compete for a starting position alongside All-Pro Fred Warner.
CB Upton Stout, Western Kentucky
The 49ers have struggled to find a reliable nickelback since K’Waun Williams left. Stout is expected to secure this crucial role, potentially playing two-thirds of the defensive snaps when the team employs five defensive backs.
DT C.J. West, Indiana
Another of the team’s five defensive draft picks within the first 113 selections, West is hoped to follow in the footsteps of D.J. Jones. While his role may commence as a rotational contributor, he could emerge as a starter alongside Collins.
Offensive Rookies to Watch
A few notable offensive additions may also become key contributors for the 49ers, particularly in light of injuries to established players:
WR Jordan Watkins, Ole Miss
Watkins has shown potential to secure a spot on the 53-man roster. With Brandon Aiyuk recovering from ACL surgery and questions surrounding veteran Demarcus Robinson’s status, Watkins’s big-play ability from college could be beneficial for quarterback Brock Purdy.
RB Jordan James, Oregon
James fits well within the 49ers’ outside-zone running scheme. While not known for straight-line speed, his quick decision-making and route-running skills make him a suitable option at running back behind Christian McCaffrey and Isaac Guerendo.
S Marques Sigle, Kansas State
Due to Malik Mustapha’s uncertain health following surgery, Sigle could step in as a competent backup safety. His versatility allows him to play multiple positions, enhancing special teams contributions.
QB Kurtis Rourke, Indiana
After undergoing ACL surgery, Rourke’s rookie season may serve as a developmental year. Expected to focus on recovery, he may compete for a roster spot in 2026 once fully healthy.
G Connor Colby, Iowa
The 49ers selected Colby to bolster their offensive line. However, he faces stiff competition to break into a top-eight spot for gamedays due to the depth and experience already present on the line.
WR Junior Bergen, Montana
Bergen is notably recognized for his contributions on special teams, specifically as a return specialist. He brings impressive statistics with eight career punt return touchdowns, making him a formidable candidate for kickoff duties.
As the 49ers prepare for the 2025 NFL season, the integration of these rookies is crucial. Their readiness to compete will significantly influence the team’s ability to rebound from a challenging offseason.
