San Francisco International Airport Commemorates Black History Month
In a powerful tribute to the cultural legacy and achievements of Black Americans, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is hosting a series of events throughout February as part of its Black History Month celebration. Visitors will encounter engaging live performances, artistic installations, and educational initiatives aimed at recognizing and honoring Black contributions to society.
Scheduled Live Performances
SFO’s vibrant atmosphere will be enhanced by live music sessions at the Terminal 3 food court rotunda. Performances will feature a blend of jazz and spoken word artistry on the following dates:
- February 7: Ramona Laughing Brook Webb and Howard Wiley from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
- February 20: Marcus Shelby from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Ramona Laughing Brook Webb
Ramona Laughing Brook Webb is an Afro-Creek Muskogee queer poet and theater artist known for her impactful spoken word performances. As the inaugural Poet in Residence at UCSF’s National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, Webb employs her poetry to explore themes of identity, justice, and resilience, all while advocating for social change.
Howard Wiley
A distinguished jazz saxophonist and composer within the Bay Area, Howard Wiley is celebrated for his innovative fusion of jazz genres. His work draws on African American musical traditions and showcases his skill in improvisation, engaging and captivating his audience through each performance.
Marcus Shelby
Marcus Shelby, an accomplished bassist and composer, engages audiences by intertwining historical narratives of Black heritage with his music. He is noted for his contributions to jazz education and serves as the Artistic Director of Healdsburg Jazz, impacting community engagement and cultural programming throughout San Francisco.

Beyond live music, SFO will showcase a curated photo backdrop adorned with inspirational quotes from notable Black leaders. This installation encourages reflection on their profound impact and invites travelers to engage with vital historical narratives.

SFO’s initiatives extend to social media, where the airport will highlight stories of Black aviators, employees, and partners who have significantly influenced the aviation sector.
