Exciting New Cafe Opens in San Francisco: George’s Donuts and Merriment
A new culinary gem has made its debut in San Francisco, attracting long lines of eager patrons along West Portal Avenue. George’s Donuts and Merriment invites customers into a delightful world of elevated pastries and more.
The Concept Behind George’s Donuts
The cafe, co-founded by Lea Dudum and Janina O’Leary, embodies the spirit of joy and nostalgia associated with donuts. After two years of meticulous planning and development, the duo has successfully launched a restaurant that goes beyond the traditional donut shop.
Dudum explains, “Donuts bring joy, they bring nostalgia. We definitely wanted to bring that in, but it felt hard not to bring in salads and sandwiches for people to enjoy in this kind of space.”
A Diverse Menu for Everyone
Unlike conventional donut establishments, George’s offers a whimsical dining experience paired with a comprehensive menu featuring not just donuts, but also a variety of food and beverage options. O’Leary highlights the café’s variety, asserting, “There’s a little bit of everything for everybody, for sure.”
- Signature dishes include:
- Donut hole flight with sugar-dusted brioche served with Valrhona chocolate fudge.
- Innovative donut flavors such as key lime pie, bacon and eggs, and strawberry champagne.
- Hearty meal options like harvest chicken salad and heirloom tomato mozzarella sandwiches.
Paying Tribute to a Family Legacy
The cafe’s name pays homage to Dudum’s grandfather-in-law, George, a colorful personality who once dubbed himself the “King of Oakland.” Dudum shares, “It’s really fun to be able to honor him and his legacy,” emphasizing the royal theme woven throughout the café’s design and offerings.
Operating Hours and Access
Guests can savor the delightful donuts Tuesday through Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. until they sell out. For those who miss the morning rush, the café menu remains available until 3 p.m.
