San Francisco Police Department Adds Social Workers to Emergency Teams
San Francisco, CA – In a landmark move, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) has added social workers to its emergency response teams to better address mental health crises and nonviolent incidents. The pilot program launched today will operate citywide, with a focus on underserved communities.
“This approach prioritizes de-escalation and care, ensuring better outcomes for everyone involved,” said Police Chief Jenna Morales. The program pairs social workers with officers to provide immediate support and connect individuals to long-term resources.
Advocates for mental health and criminal justice reform praised the initiative. “This is a step toward a more compassionate system,” said Sarah Ortiz, a spokesperson for the Bay Area Mental Health Alliance. The program will be reviewed in six months to determine its effectiveness.
