SANTA CLARA — Quarterback Brock Purdy appeared to feel discomfort in his right shoulder while throwing a pass before the 49ers’ practice Thursday.
San Francisco head athletic trainer Dustin Little was also seen rubbing Purdy’s pitching shoulder. Purdy then left the field before practice began.
Due to the condition of his right shoulder, Purdy’s availability for the 49ers’ crucial Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers is in doubt.
If Purdy is unable to play, backup quarterback Brandon Allen will start.
Purdy participated in limited practice Wednesday, but did not throw a pass during the warm-up period when reporters were allowed to observe.
Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed optimism Wednesday that Purdy will be able to play against the Packers when asked about his level of concern.
“There aren’t that many right now,” Shanahan said. “We’ll see how this week goes. But he had his limits today, so I think that’s good news.”
Purdy has started all 10 games for the 49ers this season. He completed 66 percent of his pass attempts for 2,613 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
He also ran the ball 51 times for 267 yards and a team-leading four touchdowns. He appeared in 16 games last season, gaining 144 yards on 39 attempts.
Allen, 32, has started just nine games in his NFL career. He last started in the final week of the 2021 season, completing 15 of 29 pass attempts for 136 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in a 21-16 loss to the Cleveland Browns against the Cincinnati Bengals. There was none.
Allen beat out Joshua Dobbs to earn a backup role to open the regular season.
