The San Francisco 49ers had to play without Brock Purdy in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers due to a shoulder injury. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the 49ers had some hope that he would be able to play, but something happened before the game that surprised them.
“The 49ers are hopeful quarterback Brock Purdy’s shoulder issue won’t keep him out long-term, but we didn’t know that for sure when we were in Green Bay on Sunday,” Fowler said. . “Purdy has been described as ‘day-to-day’ or ‘week-to-week’ by multiple sources.” The 49ers were surprised Thursday when he was unable to complete practice with a shoulder issue.
“They sent him for an MRI and the results were encouraging. He threw a little bit on Monday and took Tuesday off. Their plan was to assess how he was feeling on Wednesday and It’s a matter of planning from there. It’s totally unclear if Purdy will be available in Buffalo on Sunday night.”
Brandon Allen played in Purdy’s place against the Packers, but probably wasn’t able to rotate the offense as much as the team would have liked. Getting Purdy back against the Buffalo Bills would be huge, especially if they’re looking to make the playoffs at this point in the season.

Prior to the game against the Bills, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Brock Purdy was able to do some light throwing and would continue testing his shoulder this week. If Purdy is sidelined, Brandon Allen will likely start again, and Shanahan gave his opinion on how he played against the Packers.
“Brandon, I think he did a good thing,” Shanahan said. “I thought he made some big throws. Just the play I can think of, he made a terrible play the first time he threw to them. Two plays, he slipped on that field. . . . That hurt us. But I thought Brandon made some great throws and stuff that gave us a chance.”
The 49ers have been plagued by a number of injuries this season, and staying healthy for the remaining six games will be important if they are to make the playoffs. The NFC West is still in contention for the championship, so there’s a good chance that the team that’s hot at this point in the season will win the division, while other teams draw attention from the outside. For Purdy, the next few days will decide the championship. There is a lot of concern as to whether he will be able to play or not.
