The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who police say died while intervening in a business extortion case in the Mission District in July.
Derrick Robinson, 31, of Solano County, was shot to death on July 24 near the 16th Street Mission BART station.
On Wednesday, San Francisco police and the District Attorney’s Office announced arrests and charges in the case.
Luis Reboredo, 37, was arrested in Antioch last Friday on suspicion of shooting Robinson. Prosecutors have charged Mr. Reboredo with multiple crimes, alleging that he was involved in violent extortion of street vendors there.
On July 24, at 5:41 p.m., officers were called to 16th and Mission Streets for a report of a shooting. Robinson was found with at least one gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Reboredo was arrested by police on Friday in the 600 block of Shaddick Drive in Antioch. He was transported to the San Francisco Jail and arrested on suspicion of murder.
On Wednesday, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office announced charges against Mr. Reboredo, including one count of special circumstances murder, alleging he did so as a member of a criminal street gang and in furtherance of the gang’s activities.
Witnesses said Reboredo and his colleagues roamed the plaza in front of the BART station and were suspected of charging “taxes” from street vendors, prosecutors said.
One person said Reboredo told the witness that he would have to pay to sell in the area, and when the witness hesitated, Reboredo lifted his shirt to show he was carrying a concealed firearm. It is said that
Prosecutors allege the witness then agreed to pay Mr. Rebolgedo starting the next day. Later, Reboredo’s companions went to a group of women to collect the blackmail, but the women resisted and Reboredo’s companions started fighting with them.
Prosecutors said Robinson approached the scene in an apparent attempt to break up the fight, but was shot and killed by Reboredo.
Reboredo is also charged with attempted robbery, attempted extortion, and various violations with illegal possession of a firearm. Prosecutors also allege Reboredo intentionally discharged the firearm, causing the victim’s death.
Prosecutors said Reboredo is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 12 and remains in custody at this time.
