Transforming One of SF’s Busiest Neighborhoods
San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) district is set to receive a $1 billion revitalization, city officials announced on July 6, 2024. The ambitious project aims to address uneven development in the area by building affordable housing, modernizing infrastructure, and creating green spaces.
Affordable Housing and Community Investment
A key component of the project is the construction of 2,500 affordable housing units, which will address the city’s pressing housing crisis. Additionally, $200 million will be allocated to community centers, parks, and public art installations. “Revitalizing SoMa is about creating a neighborhood that works for everyone,” said Mayor Carla Alvarez during the press conference.
Concerns About Displacement
While many residents welcomed the plan, some raised concerns about potential displacement during construction. City officials assured the public that measures, such as temporary housing for affected residents and grants for small businesses, will be implemented to minimize disruption.
A Decade of Transformation
The first phase of the project, set to begin in early 2025, will focus on creating a green corridor along Howard Street. Over the next decade, the SoMa revitalization will seek to enhance quality of life, attract investment, and establish the district as a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.
