New Sculpture at Mint Plaza: A Symbol of History and Light
A stunning new addition to San Francisco’s public art scene has been unveiled at Mint Plaza: a star-shaped sculpture titled Aurum, created by the artist duo Hybycozo. This striking piece, which features a gold-painted finish, promises to illuminate the plaza at night with captivating shadows emitted from within, enhancing the area as a lively space during evening hours.
The Context of the Installation
Mint Plaza has faced challenges in recent times, prompting the San Francisco Arts Commission to approve a public art initiative aimed at revitalizing the area. The Commission noted in their project proposal that the artwork is designed to attract visitors and foster a more inviting atmosphere at night.
Meet the Artists: Hybycozo
Hybycozo, the artistic collaboration between Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu, was selected from several submissions during a 2018 call for artists. Their works are often inspired by the intricate designs of perforated metal lamps found in Middle Eastern and Moroccan cultures, typically enhanced by illumination. The choice of Aurum reflects the duo’s distinctive artistic style while also serving as a nod to the historical significance of the Old Mint, a key location during the California Gold Rush.
The Inspiration Behind Aurum
According to Filipchuk, the concept of the sculpture is deeply rooted in astronomical history. “Six billion years ago, the explosion of super-heavy stars shot gold out into the primordial ooze,” she explained in an interview with the Chronicle. “That is how the gold got to what would become the earth and would eventually change the course of California history.”
She further elaborated on the sculpture’s illuminated purpose, stating, “Light and shadow will spill out of the sculpture to remind viewers that there is a light within each of us.”
Notable Works and Legacy of Hybycozo
Hybycozo has established a notable presence beyond San Francisco, with previous installations at events like Burning Man and permanent pieces located at various international sites, including the Wynn resort in Las Vegas and the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. Their works often explore themes that carry personal significance, such as the embroidery patterns of Filipchuk’s native Ukraine, as showcased in their 2022 piece Point of View.

Conclusion: A Bright Future for Mint Plaza
The total cost of installing Aurum was $250,000, funded through the city’s 1% for Art Program. As this new sculpture brings both light and historical resonance to Mint Plaza, it stands as a testament to the intersection of art, history, and community revitalization—encouraging a newfound appreciation for this often-overlooked urban space.
