Commemoration of Tragedy

In San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood, flowers have become a poignant tribute to a family of four who lost their lives in a devastating accident, marking a somber anniversary of the incident.

Diana Zogaric, the owner of Shaw’s Candy, expressed the community’s deep sorrow, stating, “We were all extremely devastated. I mean, nothing could have been worse than that happening. It was such a worst-case scenario.”

Safety Enhancements Following the Incident

In response to the tragedy, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has undertaken significant safety initiatives at local intersections. Notably, safe-hit posts were installed at two key intersections in January, aiming to encourage slower right turns and ensure drivers yield to pedestrians.

Additionally, SFMTA plans to repaint crosswalks and install a new flashing beacon next month to further enhance visibility. Plans for new planters and a bike share station are also set to be implemented by May, signifying ongoing efforts to improve safety and traffic flow.

Community Reactions to Changes

Local residents have varied opinions regarding the recent safety updates. Brian Jones, a community member, remarked, “It’s definitely improved the flow and eliminated some of the confusion around right of ways and things of that nature, so yeah, I think it’s gotten better,” reflecting a positive view of the changes.

Conversely, Zogaric is more skeptical, commenting, “The changes that they’ve made are confusing. They cause a lot more traffic on the other cross streets because you can’t cross through there now,” indicating that some may not consider the modifications sufficient to prevent future incidents.

Memorial Plans and Ongoing Support

The office of Supervisor Myrna Melgar has announced plans for a memorial to honor the deceased family members, aiming to also recognize the community’s collective grief. Emma Hare, a representative from the supervisor’s office, noted, “A memorial that really does justice to not just the family members who perished here but also all members of the community who understand the gravity of the situation.”

Legal Proceedings

The driver involved in the crash has pleaded not guilty to charges of vehicular manslaughter, bringing further attention to the need for thorough traffic safety reforms in the area.
