Blue Angels Honor Local Hero Curt Yagi with Flight Experience
During the annual San Francisco Fleet Week, the Blue Angels airshow team recognizes individuals who significantly impact their communities. This year, they chose Curt Yagi, the executive director of the nonprofit organization City Kids R.O.C.K., to receive a thrilling ride in a Blue Angels F-18 fighter jet.
About City Kids R.O.C.K.
City Kids R.O.C.K., which stands for “Real Options for City Kids,” celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Incorporated in Visitacion Valley in San Francisco, the organization aims to uplift local youth by offering essential programs that foster joy and hope.
Yagi started with the organization as a volunteer 26 years ago and has been its executive director for the last 21 years, demonstrating his deep commitment to the community.
Program Highlights
Today, City Kids R.O.C.K. collaborates with two public elementary schools and one middle school in the area, filling gaps in educational programming and addressing various critical needs.
According to Yagi, “Our strengths are social, emotional learning, lots of recreation, outdoor activities. But we also insert ourselves to address whatever critical needs there are.” For instance, last year, the organization facilitated free eye exams and provided glasses for students in need.
The Blue Angels Experience
In recognition of Yagi’s dedication and impactful work, the Blue Angels awarded him with a 45-minute flight aboard one of their fighter jets. The experience included high-speed maneuvers that showcased the capabilities of the aircraft.
Blue Angels pilot Lieutenant Connor O’Donnell stated, “We went everywhere from -2 to 7.4 Gs, just under the speed of sound. And he got the full experience.” For Yagi, this thrilling adventure was more than just a joyride.
“I can’t put this into words,” Yagi remarked. “This is every little boy and adult’s dream to do something like this. This was unbelievable,” further illustrating the significance of the experience for him.
Community Impact
Yagi’s flight served not only as a personal milestone but also symbolized his commitment to enriching the lives of children in his community. As he soared above San Francisco, he reflected on the joy and hope he strives to bring to the students he serves every day.
