‘Private Lives’ at American Conservatory Theater: A Tango-infused Experience
The American Conservatory Theater (ACT) is set to unveil its 2024-25 season with Noël Coward’s renowned comedy, Private Lives. This classic 1930 play touches on themes of love, rivalry, and coincidence in a relatable narrative that unfolds during a couple’s honeymoon.
Plot Overview
Imagine enjoying a tranquil sunset on your hotel balcony during your honeymoon, only to find that your romantic past is not quite over. Such is the premise of Private Lives, where unexpected encounters lead to simmering tensions and unresolved feelings. The story reaches a climactic moment when the main character’s ex unexpectedly appears on the neighboring balcony, complicating an already strained relationship.
A Unique Presentation
This adaptation will take place in Argentina, a change that director KJ Sanchez believes will enrich the interpretation of Coward’s original text. By incorporating tango—a cultural symbol of passion and intensity—into the performance, the production aims to heighten the play’s emotional stakes. Cast members, including Hugo E. Carbajal, Brady Morales-Woolery, Sarita Ocón, and Gianna DiGregorio Rivera, are honing their tango skills under the guidance of local instructor Lisette Perelle, known for her dedication to the art of tango.
