This Week in Food: New Openings and Closures
New Restaurant Highlights
Piccino Presidio has officially opened in the Letterman Digital Arts Center, taking over the former Sessions space. Co-founders Margherita Sagan and Sher Rogat aim to duplicate the ambiance of their long-established Dogpatch location, emphasizing seasonal cuisine largely sourced from their farm in Healdsburg. Additionally, they have access to the organic garden at Skywalker Ranch, thanks to its George Lucas association. Menu highlights include:
- Lasagna verde with wild mushroom fonduta
- Bone-in pork chop with guajillo and apple puree
The restaurant features a full bar and lounge, which is expected to open in March, serving lunch and weekend brunch.
In Los Angeles, Boichik Bagels has expanded its reach, debuting at 4655 Hollywood Boulevard in the Los Feliz neighborhood after successfully launching three outlets in San Francisco in the past year, including a Financial District location at 22 Battery Street.
A new fusion concept, Ciaorigato, is set to launch in March at the Hotel Bijou, taking over the former Gibson location. This restaurant is the brainchild of Dario Nicotra and executive chef Marco Avila, who also run the Mexican-Italian eatery Modi. The menu will feature a blend of Japanese and Italian culinary influences, with offerings such as:
- Grilled meats and fish on charcoal grills
- Neapolitan-style pizzas with Japanese twists
- A selection of sashimis and crudos
Over in Oakland’s Grand Lake area, Sirene has emerged from the creators of The Morris. Located at 3308 Grand Avenue, the restaurant’s focus will be on seafood, presenting items like:
- Raw bar selections
- Seafood charcuterie
- Fire-grilled abalone and roasted spiny lobster
Recent Closures and Transitions
Meanwhile, Outer Orbit, the pinball-themed bar and restaurant situated at 3215 Mission Street, faces an uncertain future. A recent Instagram update hinted at potential closure or a shift towards a more bar-centric model due to management challenges.
In Hayes Valley, the arepa-focused pop-up Andina will cease operations as of March 23. Chef-owner Victoria Lozano cited personal burnout and economic pressures as contributing factors to this decision.
Lastly, chef Matt Horn has shut down his West Oakland fried chicken spot, Kowbird, to concentrate on his primary venture, Horn Barbecue.
Review Spotlight
Chronicle critic MacKenzie Chung Fegan recently featured Sheba Jazz Lounge, an Ethiopian venue in the Fillmore. Highlighting its significance as a cultural staple, the review recommends patrons listen to staff suggestions when ordering dishes such as:
- Vegetarian sampler
- Meat and fish dishes
However, Chung Fegan advises skipping non-Ethiopian options like sliders and meatballs.
