Josh Collins: A Journey of Resilience from Bodega Bay to College
Background: A Unique Family Dynamic
In Bodega Bay, Josh Collins navigated life as one of quadruplets, often recognized collectively as “The Quad.” Growing up in a bustling household filled with curiosity, he faced questions from the community about their special bond.
“Usually they ask if we can read each other’s minds. Who’s the oldest, who’s the ‘best quad?'” Josh reminisced about the attention they received.
Challenges and Changes
After a tumultuous beginning marked by domestic violence and financial hardships, Josh and his siblings moved in with their grandmother following their father’s departure. This transition brought a brief sense of normalcy until they faced another devastating blow when their mother succumbed to cancer.
“We were just together and happy; it just felt like that’s how it should be. That was the year that our mom passed away,” Collins reflected.
Seeking Growth and Independence
As Josh entered his teenage years, he sensed a growing need to carve out his own identity, distinct from his siblings. This longing for independence fueled his decision to pursue higher education far from home.
“I had to get out of there. I needed to rise above and escape through education,” he stated, marking the critical turning point in his life.
A Journey Across the Country
Josh’s path led him over 3,000 miles away to Bates College in Maine. He began his freshman year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a time fraught with uncertainty. However, his challenges were compounded by a heart condition diagnosed not long after he arrived.
Despite these obstacles, the support he received from the Students Rising Above program proved vital. His sister Dani, also a participant in the program, provided a valuable connection during this difficult time.
Future Aspirations
With graduation from Bates expected this spring, Josh aims to return to the Bay Area, hoping to contribute to the biotech field while making new memories with his grandmother and siblings.
His story exemplifies the transformative power of education and the importance of familial connections, even from a distance.
