Al Pastor Papi Expands to Brick-and-Mortar in Union Square
Renowned for its authentic Mexico City-style al pastor tacos, Al Pastor Papi is making a significant leap from food truck to a permanent storefront. Founded by one of the co-creators of Papalote, the taco purveyor is set to open a new location near Union Square this June.
New Location Details
The upcoming Al Pastor Papi eatery will be situated at 232 O’Farrell Street, occupying the space formerly held by a Chipotle restaurant. It is important to note that this location is distinct from another Chipotle a few blocks away, at Sutter and Kearny Streets. The announcement was first reported by the California Eating newsletter and subsequently confirmed by the San Francisco Chronicle, who provided insights from chef-owner Miguel Escobedo.
Menu Offerings and Community Impact
Chef Escobedo expressed enthusiasm about this transition, stating, “I’m combining everything I’ve learned into this new location.” The menu for the Union Square spot promises to feature a variety of options beyond just tacos, including:
- Salads
- Tortas
- Burritos
- Burrito bowls
In an effort to cater to diverse dietary preferences, vegetarian options will also be available, featuring substitutes such as jackfruit and Impossible meat.
Revitalization Efforts in Downtown San Francisco
The move to open this storefront is made possible through the Vacant to Vibrant program, initiated by Mayor London Breed in 2023. This initiative aims to invigorate downtown San Francisco by providing lease support and opportunities for small local vendors to occupy unoccupied storefronts. Al Pastor Papi joins other recipients of this program, such as Koolfi Creamery and Hungry Crumbs, in revitalizing the area.
A Legacy in the Making
After temporarily ceasing operations of the Al Pastor Papi food truck in early January, Escobedo hinted at future endeavors for the mobile unit but recently made a quick appearance at the Golden Gate Park band shell. He remarked, “Union Square has always been a vibrant part of San Francisco, and I’m honored to bring Al Pastor Papi to this iconic neighborhood.” Escobedo aims to reconnect with both loyal customers and newcomers with this new location, marking what he sees as a new chapter for the business.
The Craft of Al Pastor Tacos
The heart of Al Pastor Papi’s menu will still revolve around the signature pork al pastor, which is traditionally marinated and roasted on a trompo, or vertical spit—a cooking method with roots in Mexico’s Lebanese community. This method has made its mark throughout Mexico City, with various taquerias claiming the honor of being the first to serve al pastor.
As Al Pastor Papi prepares for its opening, the San Francisco community eagerly anticipates the revival of these beloved al pastor tacos, alongside an expanded menu that promises to deliver a taste of Mexico City to the heart of California.
