Austin Leigh, aged 32, passed away following a long and challenging struggle with drug addiction. His family recalls him as a deeply cherished individual whose hope for recovery never waned, showcasing unmatched determination throughout his life.
A Joyous Beginning
Austin Zechariah Leigh was born on October 19, 1992, to James and Teresa (Malowney) Leigh in Tampa, Florida, during a time of notable change in the United States, including the conclusion of the Cold War and rapid technological advancements.
Aspirations and Early Life
Growing up with his siblings—Steven, Kaelan, Christina, Megan, Leo, Natalie, and Andrew—Austin’s childhood was typical for his generation. He possessed a vibrant personality, enjoyed ice skating, field hockey, and basketball, and was a fan of the television show “The Powerpuff Girls.”
After his birth, Teresa joined the military, which led to a later divorce. Austin spent his early years in Connecticut before moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where his mother married Neil Redmond, who became an integral part of his life.
Educational Journey
Austin was homeschooled for a significant portion of his education before attending Hackett Catholic High School. Despite the difficulties posed by a learning disability, he worked diligently to complete his studies and graduated in 2010. His passion for social interactions was evident, as he dedicated time to volunteering, fulfilling school requirements while building connections with his peers.
A Resilient Spirit
Throughout his adult life, Austin faced numerous personal battles, especially with addiction. However, he remained resilient, continually fighting for a better future. His unwavering spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered, teaching his family invaluable lessons in love and forgiveness.
Legacy and Family
Austin is survived by his parents, Teresa and Neil Redmond, as well as his siblings: Steven, Kaelan, Christina, Megan, Leo, Natalie, and Andrew. He leaves behind a legacy cherished by grandparents George Malowney, Celinda Snow, Michael Leigh, and aunt Michelle Leigh. Preceding him in death were his father, James Leigh, and grandmother, Katherin Kinsley, along with step-grandfather Cornelius Redmond. He is fondly remembered by the extended Redmond family as well.
Remembrance and Funeral Services
A cremation has been completed, and a Life Story Service will be held on Wednesday, November 20, at 3:30 PM at Betzler Life Story Funeral Homes, located at 6080 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo. Attendees are invited to share food, drinks, and heartfelt memories as a way to celebrate Austin’s life.
