Former Giants pitcher Jake Peavy likes what he sees from former teammate and first-year San Francisco baseball operations director Buster Posey.
Speaking with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic on Monday at MLB’s Annual Winter Meeting Charity Auction in Dallas, Texas, Peavey spoke about the Giants’ reported acquisition of star shortstop Willie Adams. after explaining how Posey is off to a great start.
“I don’t know why anyone was surprised or why they didn’t think Buster was the guy,” Peavy told Pavlovich. “He’s been the golden kid ever since he was the (2010 National League) Rookie of the Year, winning MVP and championship after championship. I have the utmost faith in Buster. How could this not work? I don’t know. It would have to be, given what the (Los Angeles) Dodgers, (San Diego) Padres and (Arizona) Diamondbacks are doing in this division.
“Buster has already made a great move to get another Willie. Willie Adames is a great player. The left side of the infield, I really love moving Tyler Fitzgerald (to second base) – he I like what it has already done for people.”
Peavy and Posey were Giants teammates from the 2014 to 2016 seasons. The retired right-hander spent a lot of time with San Francisco’s new chief, sharing their championship experience considering they won the 2014 World Series together.
But as Peavy said, Posey is more than just one of the top minds in baseball, he’s a great person on and off the diamond.
“Buster is a very humane person,” Peavy told Pavlovich. “He loves baseball and he understands baseball quite a bit, but he also understands that we live in a world of people and their personalities and personalities matter. Willie Adames and Signing them shows they are committed to it and it’s a good start.”
Posey’s role is as much about managing relationships as it is about managing people. Peavy believes acquiring a player like Adames, who Posey hit 112 on the season just a few months after taking over the Giants, is a promising sign for the franchise’s future.
But that’s not all.
Peavey is a fan of Posey’s sense of responsibility. This executive doesn’t yell at anyone, but he is thorough in his work with honesty and accuracy.
“Well, he holds you accountable in a very nice way,” Peavy told Pavlovich. “Buster isn’t going to get in your face and really let it happen unless it gets to that point. He’s very politically correct and has a beautiful way of holding people accountable. And That’s a win. In general, in a workspace, responsibility within a team or people who have to do something is very important. So Buster did it and now what he values. It will bring to the players who are playing.
“As a former San Francisco player and someone who loves the Bay Area, I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have as manager. I think we’re about to see something special.”
Peavy wants to see the Giants return to the top of baseball and believes Posey is the right person to lead them there. Adams’ reported commitment already proves that.
