Pro-Life Advocates Gather for Walk for Life West Coast
SAN FRANCISCO (OSV News) — On January 25, a significant turnout of pro-life supporters participated in the 21st Annual Walk for Life West Coast, converging on City Hall and marching for over a mile. The event, characterized by the strong message “Abortion hurts women,” showcased the commitment of participants to advocate for the sanctity of life.
A Unified Voice for Life
Among the attendees was Elizabeth, a member of Young Adults for Christ from St. Elizabeth de Portugal Church. Accompanied by her family, she expressed, “We want all babies to have a future. Babies are life. I have my baby — he is my everything.”
The Walk for Life West Coast originated in 2005, initiated by a dedicated group of young adults who aimed to promote a culture that supports pregnant women and families while also offering healing for those affected by abortion.
The Current Landscape in California
The situation regarding life issues in California has significantly worsened since the event’s inception. Following the Supreme Court’s decision in 2022 to overturn Roe v. Wade, California enshrined the right to abortion into its state constitution, with state funding heavily directed toward abortion services.
Strengthening Community Ties
Participants traveled from various cities and states, creating a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie among individuals united by the belief in the fundamental right to life from conception to natural death. Dylan, a teen from Sacred Heart Parish in Turlock, shared his resolve: “I am here to prevent abortion. These babies don’t have a voice, and they are being killed.”
Voices of Experience
Speakers at the event underscored the moral implications of the abortion industry. Kelly Lester, who previously worked at an abortion clinic, recounted, “We did everything to make sure the woman’s choice was abortion.” After experiencing the consequences of her own abortion, she has since dedicated her life to helping others find healing through her work with organizations like And Then There Were None.
Ryan Bomberger, co-founder of The Radiance Foundation, inspired the crowd with his personal story of being conceived in rape and later adopted, emphasizing, “Life is everything. Without it, we are literally nothing.” He urged attendees to remain resolute in advocating for the innocent lives at stake.
Critical Discussions on Fertility and Life
Sister Deirdre “Dede” Byrne, a former Army surgeon, addressed the moral concerns surrounding in vitro fertilization as part of the day’s talks. The call for action culminated with Walter Hoye, a prominent pro-life activist, rallying supporters along Market Street with the urgent message, “Now is the time to stand up for life.”
Mass and Vigil: A Prelude to the Walk
The event was preceded by a prayer vigil at St. Dominic Church, led by Father Mark Mary, and included a Walk for Life Mass at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, where San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone addressed attendees. He commented on the evolving narrative surrounding abortion, expressing concern that the concept is now celebrated as a positive good.
A Message of Hope and Witness
Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento, who has participated in the walk for nearly two decades, distilled the purpose of the gathering: “We bring a joyful noise into the city. Our presence here, we are pilgrims of hope.”
