Mayor Lurie Announces Plan to Combat Open-Air Drug Markets
Mayor Daniel Lurie unveiled a multi-agency initiative to address open-air drug markets in San Francisco, particularly in neighborhoods like the Tenderloin and SoMa. The plan combines targeted law enforcement, expanded addiction treatment programs, and community outreach efforts to dismantle drug markets while supporting individuals in recovery.
“San Francisco cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering on our streets,” Lurie said during a press conference. The initiative will include additional police patrols and partnerships with nonprofits to provide immediate support for those affected by addiction.
Community leaders and residents expressed cautious optimism, with many praising the comprehensive approach. Critics, however, questioned whether the plan would adequately address systemic issues like housing insecurity and mental health care, urging a broader focus on root causes.
