Public Transit Gets Funding Boost in San Francisco
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) announced a significant funding allocation to prevent major service cuts for BART and Muni, securing their operations through 2026. The funding package, totaling $300 million, includes support for maintenance, staffing, and service enhancements.
“This is a lifeline for public transit in the Bay Area,” said State Senator Scott Wiener, who has been a vocal advocate for transit funding. The allocation ensures that essential services will continue without interruption, even as agencies face declining ridership and budget deficits.
While transit advocates welcomed the news, many emphasized the need for long-term funding solutions. Wiener has proposed a regional ballot measure in 2026 to provide sustained financial support for public transportation systems across the Bay Area.
