Introducing MESKI: An Exciting Afro-Latin Culinary Experience in San Francisco
A Culinary Collaboration
Draymond Green, a celebrated NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors, is proud to announce his new venture into the culinary world with the launch of MESKI in San Francisco. This innovative restaurant represents more than just a dining experience; it aims to revive and celebrate the rich cultural contributions of Black communities in the city.
The Visionaries Behind MESKI
Partnering with renowned restaurateur Guma Fassil and Top Chef participant Nelson German, MESKI will uniquely fuse Ethiopian and Dominican culinary traditions, creating a pioneering fusion that has not been seen before. This collaborative effort is a manifestation of their personal backgrounds and culinary aspirations, aiming to enrich San Francisco’s diverse food landscape.
“It’s great food, great vibes, great tunes. The drinks are incredible,” Green stated. “But most importantly, we’re bringing some black culture back to San Francisco.”
A Unique Culinary Fusion
At MESKI, the menu is a sophisticated blend of Ethiopian spices and Dominican flavors, showcasing dishes such as the Tomahawk Steak Encebollado, inspired by Chef German’s familial recipes. This particular dish combines sweet onions, achiote, garlic, and a Caribbean XO sauce alongside spicy lentils and twice-fried plantains, illuminating a deep connection to their roots.
An Inviting Atmosphere
The restaurant’s interior will feature an art deco aesthetic complemented by lush greenery and artwork from Taylor Smalls, providing a warm and welcoming environment. The establishment caters to both dining and vibrant nightlife, with a traditional upstairs dining area and a relaxed lounge downstairs.
Innovative Beverage Program
The drink menu at MESKI promises to be as groundbreaking as the food, incorporating inventive cocktails that celebrate the diaspora’s diversity. The bar will offer a unique twist on tropical drinks, drawing inspiration from both Caribbean and East African influences.
“We’re bringing flair and artistry typically found in Las Vegas and Miami to the Bay,” noted Fassil. “Who says nightlife and dining have to be mutually exclusive?”
Exploring Cultural Roots
The development of MESKI stemmed from a shared commitment to cultural representation and storytelling through food. The concept pays homage to the team members’ heritage, demonstrating a commitment to authenticity and tradition.
“I knew I had to be a part of this team after having the food at Guma’s restaurant and learning about Meski,” expressed German. “We’re celebrating where we’re from while bringing more culture back to San Francisco.”
The Role of Music in Dining Experience
Music will play a crucial role in shaping the ambiance at MESKI. The carefully curated soundtrack, featuring afrobeats, amapiano, and R&B, aims to enhance the dining experience, intertwining music and food into a cohesive cultural celebration.
“Music is everything. It’s the soundtrack to life,” Fassil remarked. “When you walk into MESKI, we want it to be evident that we’re having fun.”
A Forward-thinking Dining Concept
MESKI is positioned to be a unique dining experience that elevates the culinary scene in San Francisco. By embracing their diverse influences and backgrounds, Green, Fassil, and German are not just creating a restaurant; they are cultivating a cultural hub that honors the past while looking to the future.
