Kennedy’s Indian Curry House and Irish Pub Closes After 28 Years in San Francisco
After nearly three decades of serving a unique blend of Irish pub fare and Indian cuisine, Kennedy’s Indian Curry House and Irish Pub in San Francisco has officially closed its doors. The popular establishment, located at 1040 Columbus Avenue, ceased operations on February 18, 2025, due to ongoing disputes between owner Brahmabuta Swami and his landlords.
Closure Announcement
Swami confirmed the closure to Eater, expressing deep regret over the situation. “After being so long in business,” he stated, “I’m heartbroken.” The restaurant has been a staple in the community since it opened in 1992, celebrated for its late-night menu and lively atmosphere.
Legal Disputes with Landlords
The property housing Kennedy’s is owned by Shu Ming Investment Co. Limited, which filed court documents indicating their intention to terminate Swami’s lease. According to the filings, the lease was due to be terminated after seven years of operating on a month-to-month basis. The dispute escalated when Swami received a written notice demanding he vacate the premises within 30 days. However, his attorney negotiated an extension, granting Swami until February 28 to clear out the restaurant.
Amid differing accounts from both parties regarding the circumstances of the lease termination, it has been reported that Swami’s property was taken over by squatters following his lockout. In contrast, the property owner’s attorney claims that the squatters are actually employees of Swami’s establishment.
Historical Context and Challenges
Over the years, Kennedy’s faced multiple challenges that nearly led to its closure. Swami attempted to purchase the property in 2012, but claimed he was informed by the landlords that it was not for sale. In 2019, the restaurant again faced the threat of closure, prompting an emotional response from loyal patrons. The resilience of Kennedy’s was evident when it thrived once more, despite attempts to sell the property in 2022.
A Fond Farewell
Fans of Kennedy’s fondly remember its distinctive offerings, such as the famous mozzarella sticks and foosball area. Swami, who previously worked as a cable car conductor, shared that many customers expressed sorrow over the restaurant’s struggles in previous years, demonstrating the deep connection the community had built with the establishment.
Looking Ahead
As of now, Swami remains uncertain about the future of Kennedy’s, indicating that the possibility of reopening elsewhere is not off the table. The current legal situation continues to unfold as both parties pursue resolution over the property.
