Celebrating 60 Years of the Grateful Dead in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO – The city announces a three-day concert to honor the legacy of the legendary rock band.
Three-Day Concert Event
In a grand tribute to mark the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, San Francisco is planning a special three-day concert this August at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park. The event will feature Dead & Company, including original members of the iconic band, performing over all three nights.
Community Impact and Cultural Significance
Mayor Daniel Lurie shared insights about the celebration, stating, “From Haight-Ashbury and the Grateful Dead house to the Excelsior, where Jerry Garcia grew up, the Grateful Dead is embedded in San Francisco’s history.” He emphasized that this event aims to not only honor the band’s lasting influence but also to bring together generations of fans.
According to Lurie, “Sixty years later, we’re still enjoying their music—and this summer, we get to enjoy the music of Dead & Company once again. The weekend will celebrate our city’s creative spirit, boost our local economy, and bring generations of fans together. This is more than just a concert—it’s a San Francisco homecoming.”
Expected Attendance and Logistics
The proposal for the concert will be reviewed by the city’s Recreation and Park Commission on Thursday. Anticipating significant interest, organizers expect to draw up to 60,000 attendees each night of the celebration.

The Grateful Dead, renowned for their eclectic blend of rock, blues, jazz, folk, and psychedelia, has carved an indelible mark on music history with their distinctive sound and improvisational performances. This anniversary concert serves as a testament to their enduring legacy and cultural impact.
