Transition from Lilah to Super Mensch

Lilah, known for its emphasis on low-proof and non-alcoholic beverages, will be succeeded by Super Mensch—a restaurant and cocktail bar that draws inspiration from the rich traditions of Jewish delis found in New York and New Jersey. The announcement of this transition has generated considerable excitement within the community.

A Culinary Journey through Comfort Food

Chef Adam Rosenblum from Causwells is crafting a menu that highlights classic deli fare, reminiscent of the comfort foods of his upbringing. Major offerings will include:

• House-cured smoked pastrami
• Reubens on rye bread
• Matzah ball soup
• Latkes
• Decadent chocolate cake slices

Additionally, brunch enthusiasts can look forward to dishes such as challah French toast, matzo granola yogurt parfaits, and in-house made bagels and lox.

A Revitalized Beverage Program

With the transition to Super Mensch, the cocktail offerings will receive a significant revamp. Beverage director Elmer Mejicanos is developing innovative drinks inspired by classic New York deli flavors, including egg creams, celery soda, and black-and-white cookies.

The establishment has obtained a full liquor license, allowing for a diverse range of higher-proof cocktails, contrasting with Lilah’s previous low-ABV focus. Mejicanos expressed enthusiasm for this new direction, stating, “Creating a space around low-ABV cocktails was an incredible creative challenge… we couldn’t pass it up. We’ve dreamed of doing a Jewish American concept and now feels like the right time.”

Reflection on Lilah’s Legacy

Lilah launched in October 2024 with a unique focus on low-proof drinks, similar to Mejicanos’s earlier project, Red Window. It featured an innovative drink menu that pushed beverage creativity within the limitations of a beer and wine license. Alongside, the food offerings included Asian-inspired dishes such as Taiwanese pork belly buns.

Looking Forward: Super Mensch’s Opening Date

While Lilah will close its doors on May 4, preparations for Super Mensch are already underway. The team plans to unveil the new venue in July 2025 at 2336 Chestnut Street, promising a nostalgic return to cherished deli traditions.
