The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup following a dramatic 4–3 penalty shootout victory over Costa Rica on June 29. The quarterfinal match, held at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, ended in a 2–2 draw after regulation time, leading to a tense shootout where goalkeeper Matt Freese emerged as the hero.
Costa Rica opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a penalty converted by Francisco Calvo, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by the U.S. team. However, the USMNT responded before halftime, with Diego Luna netting his first international goal in the 43rd minute to level the score.
In the second half, Max Arfsten gave the U.S. a 2–1 lead in the 57th minute, showcasing the team’s attacking prowess. Yet, Costa Rica’s Alonso Martínez equalized in the 71st minute, setting the stage for a nail-biting conclusion.
The match proceeded to penalties, where Freese’s performance was pivotal. He saved three of Costa Rica’s five penalty attempts, including a decisive stop against Andy Rojas. Damion Downs converted the final penalty for the U.S., sealing the 4–3 shootout win and propelling the team into the semifinals.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised Freese’s resilience, especially after the goalkeeper faced criticism for an earlier error in the tournament. “Matt showed incredible character and focus tonight,” Pochettino said. “His preparation and determination were evident in those crucial moments.”
The USMNT will face Guatemala in the semifinals on July 2 in St. Louis. Guatemala advanced after a surprising victory over Canada, marking their first semifinal appearance in 29 years. This matchup presents an opportunity for the U.S. to continue their pursuit of the Gold Cup title.
Costa Rica’s head coach, Miguel Herrera, acknowledged the disappointment of the loss but emphasized the importance of learning from the experience. “We aimed to reach the final, and falling short is a setback,” Herrera stated. “However, this tournament provided valuable lessons as we prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.”
The U.S. team’s journey in the 2025 Gold Cup has been marked by determination and adaptability. With a blend of seasoned players and emerging talents, the USMNT aims to build momentum as they approach the final stages of the competition.
