Paul Thiel, an 87-year-old poet from St. Louis, began his academic career pursuing a doctorate in geology. However, he recognized a deep desire to embrace a life woven with artistic expression. In San Francisco, Thiel resided in a Victorian house populated by aspiring artists. This unique community included future rock icon Janis Joplin, who rehearsed with her band in the basement. Thiel humorously recalls his initial disinterest in rock music, opting instead to play classical opera at high volumes to drown out their jams.

During their time together, Thiel performed a sort of resistance through his music choices, unknowingly influencing Joplin. He discovered later that one of his favorite songs, “Cry Baby” by Garnet Mimms, became one of her hits, creating a funny and unexpected link between the two artists.
