San Francisco’s Homelessness Strategy Under Review
Mayor Daniel Lurie’s administration announced a comprehensive review of the city’s homelessness strategy, signaling a shift in focus toward long-term solutions. The new plan will emphasize expanding housing options and recovery services, diverging from harm reduction models that have been central to the city’s approach for years.
“Addressing homelessness requires a compassionate yet practical strategy that helps people rebuild their lives,” Lurie said during a press briefing. The review will examine existing programs and identify areas for improvement, including better coordination between shelters, healthcare providers, and social services.
Community groups and advocates have expressed mixed reactions. While some welcomed the focus on permanent housing, others cautioned against abandoning harm reduction practices that address immediate needs. The administration plans to release a detailed action plan by mid-year, incorporating feedback from residents and experts.
