San Francisco Expands Free Legal Aid for Tenants
San Francisco, CA – In a win for renters, the city has announced an expansion of its free legal aid program to assist tenants facing eviction or unsafe housing conditions. The initiative, funded by a $10 million grant from the state, will offer legal counsel, mediation services, and workshops on renters’ rights.
“Everyone deserves a safe and stable home,” said Housing Director Angela Lee. The program will focus on low-income residents and neighborhoods with high eviction rates, such as the Tenderloin and SoMa.
Tenant advocates praised the expansion, calling it a necessary step to address the housing crisis. “This gives renters the tools to stand up for themselves,” said Sarah Ortiz, director of the Bay Area Housing Alliance. Applications for services opened today.
