San Francisco Launches Electric Ferry Service on Bay
San Francisco debuted its first electric ferry, the Bay Breeze, as part of a citywide push to reduce carbon emissions in public transportation. The ferry, which operates between Pier 41 and Oakland’s Jack London Square, is powered entirely by renewable energy.
“This is the future of green transportation,” said SFMTA Director Jeffrey Tumlin during the maiden voyage. The electric ferry is quieter, faster, and more environmentally friendly than traditional diesel-powered vessels.
Passengers praised the smooth and quiet ride, while environmentalists called for the rapid expansion of the electric fleet. The city plans to replace all diesel ferries with electric models by 2035.
