San Francisco Introduces New Urban Agriculture Grant Program
San Francisco announced the launch of a $20 million urban agriculture grant program aimed at increasing food security and greening city spaces. The initiative will provide funding to community gardens, rooftop farms, and urban agriculture startups to produce fresh, local food for underserved neighborhoods.
“Urban agriculture is a critical part of building a sustainable and equitable food system,” said Mayor London Breed during the program’s launch at a community garden in Bayview-Hunters Point. The grants will prioritize projects in areas with limited access to fresh produce and will include training programs for residents to grow their own food.
Advocates hailed the initiative as a step toward tackling food deserts in San Francisco, but some expressed concerns about the long-term sustainability of the projects. City officials pledged to monitor outcomes and provide ongoing support for successful initiatives.
