A Milestone for Housing Equity
San Francisco broke ground on a 250-unit affordable housing complex in Bayview-Hunters Point on August 23, 2024. The project is part of the city’s broader effort to address the housing crisis and prioritize underserved communities.
Affordable and Transitional Housing
Seventy-five percent of the units will be reserved for low-income families earning less than 50% of the area’s median income, while the remaining 25% will serve as transitional housing for individuals moving out of homelessness. The complex will also feature a childcare center, job training facilities, and a community garden.
Addressing Long-Standing Inequities
“This is a long-overdue investment in one of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods,” said Supervisor Shamann Walton, who represents the district. The project reflects the city’s commitment to addressing systemic inequities in housing access.
Balancing Growth with Preservation
While the development has been widely praised, some critics have raised concerns about potential gentrification and displacement. City leaders emphasized that priority will be given to current residents when allocating units and that community input will guide the project’s development.
