Cathenge: A New Cat-Inspired Art Installation in Hayes Valley
Introduction to Cathenge
The newest artistic addition to San Francisco’s Hayes Valley has taken the community by storm. Known as “Cathenge,” this installation features six towering, illuminated cat sculptures, each standing nine feet tall. It provides a playful nod to feline enthusiasts while simultaneously enhancing the artistic landscape of Patricia’s Green.
Opening Ceremony Details
While the installation has been in place for the past few weeks, the official Cathenge Ribbon Cutting Reception is set for tonight, December 2, at 6 p.m. Attendees can look forward to lively performances by the unique brass band Mission Delirium and the jazz ensemble Curious Planet Jazz Band. The event will be emceed by the renowned Dr. Hal Robbins, associated with the Church of the Subgenius.
What to Expect from the Installation
The San Francisco Arts Commission describes each of the six sculptures—referred to as “Catholiths”—as 3D-printed works of art resting on a base adorned with laser-cut motifs and metallic touches inspired by space cats. In addition to the visual spectacle, the installation includes sound components that activate with motion, enhancing its interactive experience for viewers.

Cathenge will remain on display at Patricia’s Green for one year, until fall 2023. Access to this captivating installation is free and available to the public during park hours, from 5 a.m. to midnight daily, encouraging community engagement and appreciation for art.
