City Declares State of Emergency as Heavy Storms Hit Bay Area
San Francisco declared a state of emergency as torrential rains and high winds battered the Bay Area, causing widespread flooding and power outages. The Department of Emergency Management activated response teams to assist residents in flooded neighborhoods like the Mission and SoMa.
“This storm underscores the urgent need for climate-resilient infrastructure,” said Mayor London Breed. Emergency shelters were opened across the city, and public transit services were partially suspended due to flooded tracks.
While officials worked to mitigate the damage, climate activists urged the city to accelerate its flood prevention projects, including upgrades to stormwater systems and wetland restoration.
