On July 22, 2022, I had the pleasure of meeting with David Lee, one of the rising stars in San Francisco’s contemporary art scene. A painter and muralist known for his striking visual storytelling, Lee has quickly gained recognition for his work that blends abstract art with urban themes, creating pieces that are both visually stunning and thought-provoking. As a first-generation Korean-American artist, his work reflects a unique fusion of his cultural heritage and experiences growing up in the diverse urban environment of San Francisco.
David Lee’s work, which has been displayed in numerous galleries and public spaces throughout the Bay Area, incorporates a wide array of styles, from bold geometric shapes to fluid, organic forms. His murals, often seen adorning the walls of buildings in neighborhoods like the Mission District and Tenderloin, tell stories of community, identity, and resilience. The series, which is set to be displayed at the Contemporary Art Museum later this year, incorporates elements of local scenery, from the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the fog that rolls in from the bay. “I want my work to evoke the feeling of living in the Bay Area—how the landscape here has shaped my identity,” Lee explained.
Lee’s approach to public art is deeply rooted in the idea of community engagement. “I believe that art should be accessible, especially in urban spaces,” he said. “When I create murals, I think about how people interact with the work. It’s not just about creating something pretty—it’s about making something that people can connect with on a deeper level.” His murals have transformed the cityscape, turning dull, gray walls into vibrant works of art that reflect the cultural richness of San Francisco.
In addition to his work as a visual artist, Lee is an advocate for arts education and mentorship. He works with local youth through the San Francisco Art Institute’s outreach programs, encouraging young people to explore their creative potential and find their own voices through art. “Art has always been a tool for me to express myself, and I want to pass that on to the next generation. If I can inspire even one young artist to find their path, then I’ve done my job.”
