San Francisco celebrated the 150th anniversary of its iconic cable cars on July 31, 2024, with citywide events honoring the legacy of one of the world’s most famous transportation systems. Commemorative Parade and Free Rides
A special parade featured restored 19th-century cable cars alongside modern models, decorated with flowers and banners. “The cable cars are more than a mode of transport—they’re a symbol of San Francisco’s resilience and charm,” said Mayor Carla Alvarez during the festivities. Free rides were offered throughout the day, allowing residents and tourists to experience the historic system firsthand.
Honoring Cable Car Workers
The celebrations also paid tribute to the operators and mechanics who have kept the cable cars running for over a century. Visitors toured the Cable Car Museum, which showcased exhibits on the history and engineering behind the system, including its recovery after the 1906 earthquake.
