San Francisco to Test Universal Basic Income Expansion in 2025
San Francisco announced plans to expand its Universal Basic Income (UBI) program to include 5,000 additional residents in a new pilot starting in early 2025. Participants will receive $1,200 monthly payments for two years, with the program focused on low-income families, seniors, and gig workers.
“This program is about economic stability and opportunity,” said Mayor London Breed. Initial results from a smaller UBI pilot showed improvements in participants’ mental health, financial security, and overall well-being.
Critics raised concerns about long-term funding, but city officials emphasized that the program will be rigorously evaluated to assess its impact and scalability. Advocates hope the expanded pilot will provide valuable insights for broader implementation.
