The New York Yankees staged a stunning late-game rally to defeat the Seattle Mariners 6–5 in extra innings, completing a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium. Despite being held hitless through seven innings by Mariners’ All-Star pitcher Bryan Woo, the Yankees overcame a 5–0 deficit to secure their fourth consecutive win, bolstering their momentum as they approach the All-Star break.
Woo delivered a masterful performance, carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning and retiring 17 consecutive batters after a shaky first inning. He utilized his four-seam fastball for 74% of his 103 pitches, effectively neutralizing the Yankees’ left-handed hitters. Woo also achieved several milestones, including his 300th career strikeout and setting a new MLB record with 18.1 scoreless innings to start his career at Yankee Stadium.
Seattle built a 5–0 lead, highlighted by Jorge Polanco’s three-run homer in the seventh inning. However, the Yankees’ offense erupted in the eighth, beginning with Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s leadoff single to break up the no-hitter. Giancarlo Stanton followed with a two-run pinch-hit homer, his first in such a role, narrowing the gap to 5–3.
In the ninth, with two outs and the bases loaded, Austin Wells delivered a clutch two-run single off Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz, tying the game at 5–5. Devin Williams held Seattle scoreless in the top of the tenth, setting the stage for Aaron Judge’s walk-off sacrifice fly, which scored Anthony Volpe, who executed a superb slide to evade the tag at home plate.
Marcus Stroman started for the Yankees, pitching five innings and allowing two runs in his third start since returning from a knee injury. The bullpen combined to keep the Mariners scoreless over the final five innings, with Williams earning the win.
The victory improved the Yankees’ record to 52–41, while the Mariners fell to 48–45, dropping them out of playoff position. The Yankees will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming series against the Chicago Cubs before the All-Star break.
