A Race for the Record Books
The annual San Francisco Marathon attracted over 30,000 runners on July 20, 2024, making it the largest marathon in the city’s history. Participants from across the globe took on the challenging 26.2-mile course, which highlights San Francisco’s most iconic landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Twin Peaks.
Elite Athletes Shine
Elite runners from Kenya and Ethiopia dominated the top spots, with both the men’s and women’s winners setting course records. Local runners also celebrated personal victories, with many participating to raise funds for charitable causes. “This marathon showcases not just the beauty of San Francisco, but the strength of the human spirit,” said Race Director Carla Chen.
Community Support and Festivities
The streets were lined with cheering spectators, live bands, and volunteers handing out water and snacks. Local businesses, particularly those near the race route, reported strong sales as they welcomed marathon attendees and supporters. The event also featured a post-race celebration at the Embarcadero, complete with food trucks and entertainment.
Giving Back Through Running
Proceeds from the marathon will benefit youth sports programs, health initiatives, and community organizations. The record-breaking turnout reflects the marathon’s growing popularity and its role in uniting people from diverse backgrounds through fitness and philanthropy.
