San Francisco Awards First Earthquake-Resilient Housing Grants
San Francisco, CA – The city awarded its first round of grants under the Earthquake-Resilient Housing Program today, providing funds to retrofit older apartment buildings and single-family homes. The program, funded by a $50 million allocation from the state, aims to strengthen structures in high-risk areas.
“This is about protecting lives and homes,” said Housing Director Angela Lee. Priority is given to buildings in neighborhoods like the Mission District and the Marina, which sustained significant damage during last week’s quake.
Property owners praised the program for making safety improvements more accessible. “We’ve wanted to retrofit for years but couldn’t afford it until now,” said landlord Carlos Hernandez, whose 1920s building houses multiple families. The city plans to release additional grant funds in early 2025.
