San Francisco Expands Tax Incentives for Green Energy Retrofits
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved new tax incentives to encourage property owners to retrofit buildings with energy-efficient systems such as solar panels, heat pumps, and green roofs. The program aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from residential and commercial properties, which account for 40% of the city’s total emissions.
“Retrofitting buildings is one of the fastest ways to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Supervisor Connie Chan. Eligible property owners can receive tax breaks of up to $10,000 for completing approved upgrades.
While environmental advocates praised the move, some property owners raised concerns about upfront costs. The city has partnered with banks to offer low-interest loans to help cover retrofit expenses.
