San Francisco unveiled a bold new initiative today to achieve zero waste by 2035, introducing stricter recycling policies, composting mandates, and incentives for businesses to reduce waste. Mayor London Breed announced the program during a press conference at Recology, emphasizing the city’s commitment to sustainability and climate action.
“This is about building a future where nothing goes to landfill,” Breed said. “San Francisco has always led the way in environmental innovation, and we’re doubling down on that commitment.”
The program includes citywide education campaigns on proper waste sorting, subsidies for businesses adopting sustainable practices, and fines for noncompliance. Residents will receive free compost bins and regular guidance from city officials to improve participation rates. Environmental groups applauded the move but urged the city to address challenges such as enforcement and contamination in recycling streams.
Businesses expressed mixed reactions. While many supported the initiative, others cited concerns about costs and operational impacts. City officials pledged to work closely with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.
