Bay Area Faces Severe Weather Threats Ahead
Published on:
Upcoming Storm Systems to Impact the Region
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for the Bay Area as a series of storm systems is expected to bring hazardous conditions this week. According to the NWS, a significant weather pattern is anticipated to develop, starting Monday afternoon and continuing through Tuesday afternoon.
Beach Advisory and Hazardous Conditions
As part of the precautionary measures, the coastal areas, including San Francisco and the North Bay, are currently under a high surf advisory until 4:00 PM. Following this, both a high surf warning and a coastal flood warning will take effect, lasting until noon on Tuesday. Some regions could experience dangerous breakers reaching heights of up to 40 feet.
The NWS cautions that these conditions will likely create life-threatening swimming and surfing scenarios and provoke significant beach erosion. People are strongly advised to avoid the water, rocks, jetties, and piers during this period.
Expected Rainfall and Flooding Risks
Rainfall projections indicate that the North Bay might bear the brunt of the storm, with anticipated totals reaching up to 2.5 inches on higher terrain over the course of Monday and Tuesday, and cumulative totals possibly reaching as high as 9 inches by Saturday. Elsewhere in the Bay Area, individuals can expect rain accumulations between 1 to 4 inches, and localized areas such as the Santa Cruz Mountains could receive up to 5 inches.
With these forecasts, significant coastal flooding is likely, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions to safeguard flood-prone areas. The NWS has warned that numerous roads may be affected, and critical infrastructure could also be compromised.
Wind Gusts and Potential Thunderstorms
In addition to the heavy rain and surf hazards, wind gusts are predicted to exceed 45 mph in the early part of the week, adding to the risks. Furthermore, isolated thunderstorms may occur from early Tuesday through early Wednesday.
