San Francisco Adds Mobile Crisis Units to Address Opioid Overdoses
In response to rising opioid-related overdoses, San Francisco expanded its mobile crisis response units to provide on-the-spot medical care and connect individuals to treatment services. The additional units, staffed by paramedics and social workers, will operate 24/7 in neighborhoods most affected by the crisis, including the Tenderloin and SoMa.
“Our focus is saving lives and offering a pathway to recovery,” said Director of Public Health Dr. Grant Colfax. The expansion is funded by a $20 million state grant aimed at combating the opioid epidemic.
Community advocates praised the program but called for increased access to long-term treatment facilities. City officials noted that plans are underway to open additional detox centers and supportive housing units in 2025.
