San Francisco Expands Protected Bike Lanes
San Francisco, CA – The city has added five miles of protected bike lanes to its cycling network, bringing the total to 40 miles of protected lanes citywide. The new lanes are part of the Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2030.
“These lanes make cycling safer and more accessible for everyone,” said Transportation Director Elena Cruz. Key areas, including Valencia Street and Van Ness Avenue, were prioritized based on traffic safety data.
Cyclists praised the improvements but called for faster action to expand the network further. “Every new lane saves lives,” said local bike advocate Carlos Nguyen. The city plans to add another 10 miles of protected lanes by the end of 2024.
