Expanding Access to Clean Energy
San Francisco introduced a community solar program on July 28, 2024, designed to make renewable energy accessible to renters, low-income households, and small businesses. The program allows participants to subscribe to energy generated by shared solar farms, providing them with the benefits of solar power without needing to install panels on their property.
Reducing Energy Costs
“This program ensures that the benefits of clean energy are equitable,” said Environmental Director Lisa Martinez. Subscribers can save up to 20% on their electricity bills while supporting the city’s goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2045.
Praised by Advocates
Community advocates applauded the initiative as a step toward environmental and social justice, though some called for even greater subsidies to make solar power affordable for the city’s most vulnerable populations. “Programs like this are essential to fighting both climate change and energy inequality,” said climate activist Sarah Wong.
First Solar Farm to Go Online in 2025
The first solar farm under the program is expected to begin operations in early 2025. If successful, officials plan to expand the initiative, further demonstrating San Francisco’s leadership in sustainable energy solutions.
