In a major philanthropic move, a coalition of San Francisco tech companies announced plans to fund a new 500-bed homeless shelter in the Mission District. The facility, which will open in mid-2025, will include on-site medical care, job training programs, and mental health services.
“This is about coming together as a community to address one of San Francisco’s most urgent issues,” said Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, who spearheaded the effort. The $150 million project will be fully funded by private donations from tech giants including Salesforce, Google, and Twitter.
While advocates praised the project, some residents raised concerns about its location, citing fears of increased foot traffic and safety issues. City officials assured the public that the facility would include 24/7 security and community engagement programs to address concerns.
Homelessness advocates expressed optimism, noting that the shelter’s comprehensive approach could serve as a model for addressing the city’s homelessness crisis.
